Description:
Rare, usually benign tumor of the Schwann cells or nerve cells, occurring cutaneously or subcutaneously on any part of the body; also in the skeletal muscles or internal organs. Appearing as a firm pedunculated or sessile nodule about 0.5 to 2.0 cm in diameter. Histologically the tumor is characterised by large polyhedral cells with pale cytoplasm filled with coarse acidophilic granules. In skin tumours, strands of collagen are surrounded by groups of tumor cells. Most of the tumors are benign and do not recur when completely excised, but some instances of malign degeneration and metastases have been observed. Onset between 30 and 50 years of age, asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic. Unknown etiology.
