While still a student, Astrogildo Machado worked with Carlos Chagas as his assistant in the research on American trypanosomiasis. He first devoted his efforts to cytology and the evolution of protozoans, specially the trypanosomes, but later turned his attention to chemistry and immunology. He made important contributions to a vaccine against the haematic carbuncle, a cattle disease.
