Obsolete, no longer used term for essential thrombocythaemia, a haematological disorder characterized by prolonged bleeding time and splenomegaly, with excessive bleeding after minor trauma and at surgery.





Biography:
Giovanni Di Guglielmo was born to Italian parents in Brazil but went to school in Italy from the age of 6. Having completed his medical education, he went to Sao Paulo to practice, but after only six months he was back in Italy, working with Adolfo Ferrata (1880-1946) in Naples. He was appointed professor of medical pathology at Pavia in 1928 and later professor of medicine at Catania. He held similar tenure at Naples and in Rome.
