Classification of poly-morphonuclear neutrophils or eosinophile leukocytes in groups or class with the help of differential counting based on the number of lobes (1 - 5) in the nucleus. Termed stages 1 to 5, respectively. The more mature the cell the greater the number of lobes. An increased number of lobes is termed a shift to the right and is seen in megaloblastic anaemias. No longer in use.
