Resection of primary rectal cancer with permanent colostomy. The lower part of the sigmoid or the upper part of the rectum is resected distal to the neoplasm. The bowel is then divided in the region of the descending colon. After the intervening segment of bowel has been removed, the proximal end of the descending colon is brought to the surface, as in the performance of a single-barrelled colostomy. The proximal end of the distal segment is oversewn and left in place leaving a blind rectal pouch. 1923.
