A species of large coccobacilli that are pathogenic for man. Clinical infections may be characterized by acute mesenteric lymphadenitis or enterocolitis. It can be confused with appendicitis or Crohn's disease and is sometimes followed by arthritis. Yersinia infections are one of the causes of Reiter's disease. The disease may progress to septicaemic form in children, and mortality may as high as 50 percent.
