Biography of Hermann Henry Hoppe

Hermann Henry Hoppe was born in Cincinnati of German-American parentage. He entered Xavier College, and then Ohio Medical College in 1886, graduating M.D. in 1889. After his internship he went to Strassburg where he studied pathology with Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen (1833-1910) and neurology with Hermann Oppenheim (1858-1919) in Berlin. After returning to America in 1892 he settled in Cincinnati as a neuropsychiatrist and became lecturer in nervous diseases at Ohio Medical College. When the University of Cincinnati Medical School was founded in 1900 he became head of the neurological department. He visited Europe on a number of occasions and wrote papers on many neurological topics.
