Description:
A particular form of malign, multifocal vascular neoplasm. Characterized by multiple dark, bluish macular skin lesions, nodules and plaques, enlarging to 1 to 3 cm in diameter, that eventually may become sarcomatous. Progressive invasion, along course of superficial vein to involve both limbs symmetrically. Distal parts of the extremities are most frequently affected.
An African variant also involves lymph nodes and viscera (e.g., liver, spleen). Normally seen in elderly patients and of little influence to expected lifespan.
Occurs sporadically in all geographical areas, with major frequency in European Jews, Italians, and blacks. Predominant in males (10: 1). Onset in Europeans at late age; in blacks at all ages. Previously a rare condition, it now occurs epidemically in immunosuppressed patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Aetiology unknown.
