Battey's operation

Synonyms:
Ovariotomy.

Associated persons:
Robert Battey

Description:
Removal of normal ovaries to induce an artificial menopause for the cure of uterine fibroids and other ill-defined conditions. It was Battey’s conviction that to excise the ovaries whether diseased or not, would do away with disturbances of menstruation accompanied by various nervous manifestations (such as severe headaches, pelvic pain, and hysteroepileptic attacks).

We have also this French description: Castration ovarienne appliquée au traitement des fibromes utérines et préconisée également dans la neurasthenie et l'hystérie.

The opeation was first performed by Battey on August 17, 1872.
