The external conjugate diameter of the pelvis. Distance between the depression just beneath the processus spinosis of the last lumbar vertebra and the margin of the symphysis pubis. Demands no investigation and enables a conclusion on the length of the conjugata vera and thus the condition of the opening of the pelvis.
