Halsted's suture

Associated persons:
William Stewart Halsted

Description:
A suture for wounds, made in an interrupted mattress pattern. It is used for exact skin approximation. It consists of a stitch parallel to the wound on one side, with the two free ends of the material emerging on the other side, where they are tied. It has been called "American stitching" because the scars are cosmetically good-looking. Halsted's suture is a modification of the Lembert suture.

See also Lembert's suture, under Antoine Lembert, French physician, 1802-1851.
