Description:
A haemorrhagic disorder, chiefly affecting women, in which there is a pronounced reduction in circulating blood platelets, due to presence in blood plasma of a substance that agglutinates platelets. Symptoms include scattered petecchiae, bleeding from mouth and skin upon slight injury, menorrhagia, epistaxis, and inflammatory purpuric lesions of the skin and mucous membranes. In severe cases there may also be hemorrhagic bullae in the oral mucosa, and sometimes intracranial haemorrhage. Primary cause unknown.
Werlhof described the disease picture in a ten year old girl and named it Morbus haemorrhagicus maculosus. Purpura haemorrhagica was named "morbus maculosis haemorrhagicus" by Rudolph August Behrens (died 1747).
