Description:
A psychological theory stating that the symptoms of built-up or suppressed affections and psychic traumas not dealt with can be eliminated through recalling and working on one's feelings in conversations.
Therapy based on this theory is known as cathartic treatment, chimney-sweeping, deep psychotherapy, or talking therapy – the forerunner of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis.
