Dieulafoy's lesion

Also known as:
Dieulafoy's malformation

Associated persons:
Paul Georges Dieulafoy

Description:
A rare cause of recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding, arising from a submucosal artery that runs aberrantly close to the intestinal mucosa. Although they can occur throughout the GI tract, the most common site is just below the esophageal-gastric junction. Unlike gastric ulcers, Dieulafoy lesions by definition have no surrounding mucosal defect.
