Description

A classical diagnostic test for tuberculosis in which a little tuberculin is applied to a superficial abrasion of the skin of the arm. A positive reaction is seen if a red papillar eruption appears several days later at the site of the inoculation.

"Only those individuals who have already been infected with tuberculosis show an inflammatory reaction at the point of vaccination . . . .whereas the healthy individuals show no reaction at all."
The Pirquet skin test for tuberculosis is an international household term in the developed world; when introduced in the beginning of the century it represented a landmark in the diagnostics of tuberculosis.

Pirquet first reported his discovery to the meeting of the Berlin Medical Association (Berliner med. Gesellschaft) on May 8 and 15, 1907.
