This eponym has been used as a synonym for von Recklinghausen's disease, or neurofibromatosis. That, however, is a misnomer, as the Elephant Man suffered from the Proteus syndrome. See under Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen, German pathologist, 1833-1910.
