Stannius' ligature

Also known as:
Stannius experiment

Associated persons:
Hermann Friedrich Stannius

Description:
A ligature between the sinus venosus and auricle of the frog’s heart. Stannius thereby demonstrated that the sinus is the pacemaker of the heart – yet the muscle tissues of the atria and the ventricles have a spontaneous and independent rhythm.
