    Aetiologically heterogeneous early embryonal development disturbance of the mesoderm of the eye. The terms Rieger's syndrome, anomaly and malformation have been employed interchangeably. In recent years Rieger syndrome has been reserved for the autosomal dominant condition of ocular defects together with dental and facial abnormalities, while Rieger anomaly, or malformation, pertains to isolated eye defects. However, most medical dictionaries enter the Rieger phenotype and syndrome as one entity. The bibliography is the same.
