Biography of Franz Seitelberger

Franz Seitelberger studied medicine at the University of Vienna where he obtained his doctorate. In 1950 he qualified as a specialist in neurology ab psychiatry. Following his habilitation in neurology, neuroanatomy and nauropathology in 1950, he beca professor extraordinary at the University if Vienna in 1958. He was head of the Department of Neurology of the University of Vienna 1959-1987, 1970-1990 head of the Institute of Cerebral Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, 1975-1977 rector of the University of Vienna, the prorector 1977-1978. In 1960 Seitelberger was a visiting professor and from 1984 to 1986 Fogarty Scholar at the Natiponal Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, U.S.A. He was emerited in 1987.

He made substantial contributions in the fields of neurology, neuroanatomy and neuropathology, especially concerning the ageing of the brain and neurodegenerative processes. He had more than 400 scientific publications. In 1987 he was awarded the Erwin Schrödinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
