Hans Ulrich Zellweger

Hans Ulrich Zellweger studied in Zurich, Hamburg, Berlin and Rome. He graduated M.D. at the University of Zurich in 1934 and undertook further training in Lucerne. During the years 1937-1939 he worked with Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) in Schweitzer's jungle hospital on the banks of the Ogooué River, in Lambaréné in the Gabon province of French Equatorial Africa. From 1939 he was assistant to Guido Fanconi at the Children's Hospital in Zurich. In 1951 Zellweger became professor of paediatrics at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1959 he immigrated to the United States of America to take up a similar post at the University of Iowa. After being emerited in 1977, Zellweger directed the regional genetic service of the State of Iowa.
