Hyrtl's Lehrbuch passed through 22 editions and was translated into the principal modern languages.
10: Hyrtl was one of the most popular teachers in Europe and probably the most eloquent lecturer on anatomy in the nineteenth century. According to Garrison his courses were "followed by enthusiastic crowds of every race and class, even foreign nobles and consuls" (Fielding H. Garrison). This book was written during Hyrtl's thirty-year professorship at the University of Vienna and is one of thefinest unillustrated treatises on anatomy. Its deserved popularity eventually led to twenty-two editions with translations in every major language.
