Biography of Herbert Assmann

Herbert Assmann studied at Königsberg, Freiburg, and Munich, obtaining his doctorate at Königsberg in 1905. He worked as an assistant at the pathological institute in Geneva under Max Askanazy (1865-1940), in the medical clinic at Königsberg under Ludwig Lichtheim (1845-1915), as physician in chief (Oberarzt) at the city hospital in Dortmund with Walter Rindfleisch (1872-1928), and at the medical clinic in Leipzig with Ernst Adolf Gustav Gottfried von Strümpell (1853-1925) and Paul Morawitz (born 1879).

Assmann was habilitated at Leipzig in 1913, becoming ausserordentlicher professor in 1919, in 1927 full professor as well as director of the medical policlinic. In 1931 he was called to Königsberg to succeed Max Matthes (1865-1930), becoming professor and director of the medical clinic at the University of Königsberg. His work concerns roentgen diagnostics, research on tuberculosis, diseases of the joints and various other fields in internal medicine, often bordering on neurology.
