Biography of Alphonse François Marie Guérin

Alphonse François Marie Guérin studied in Paris. He became Aide d'anatomie in 1843, and obtained his doctorate in 1847, becoming prosector of the amphi theatre in 1848. In 1850, through concours, he became Chirurgien des hôpitaux. He was then successively surgeon at the hospitals Lourcine (1857) and Cochin (1862), before being appointed Chirurgien en chef at the Hôpital Saint-Louis. Finally, in 1872, he was appointed surgeon to the Hôtel-Dieu. He retired from this position in 1879 to become honorary hospital surgeon.
In 1858 the hospital surgeons elected him their representative at the Conseil de surveillance d'assistance publique, and in 1864 to the Conseil général de Departement Morbihan for the canton of Mauron.

In 1896 his city of birth had a memorial of him raised, as the discoverer of the cotton wool dressing.

Besides this, and his many eponyms, he also described a procedure for immediate blood transfusion under the term "Communauté de la circulation. His main interest was in urologic surgery.
