Biography of Alfred Marius Bongiovanni

Alfred Marius Bongiovanni received his B.S. degree in 1940 from the Villanova University, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1943. He received additional training in Pediatric Endocrinology at Johns Hopkins, where he served for a time as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics.

Bongiovanni has held a large number of teaching positions, among them William H. Bennett Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was physician-in-chief Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 1963-1972;

Bongiovanni's chief contribution is in the field of endocrinology. With his colleague, Dr. Walter Eberlein, he developed test the adrenal glands ability to make hormones. In 1956 he received the Ciba Award, the highest award given by the Endocrine Society to an investigator; in 1957, with Dr. Eberlein, he was given the E. Mead Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics, again the highest honour bestowed by that society to an investigator. On November 4, 1968, Alfred Marius Bongiovanni was awarded the Mendel Medal. The Mendel Medal was founded by Villanova University in 1929 in honour of Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884), discoverer of the laws of heredity which now bear his name.
