Biography of Alfred Wolff-Eisner

Alfred Wolff-Eisner studied at Berlin as well as at Kiel and Tübingen, where he obtained his doctorate in 1901. He spent his internship and assistant period at the Berlin city hospitals under Moritz Litten (1845-1907) and Johannes Karl August Eugen Alfred Goldscheider (1858-1935), at the Königsberg hygienic institute under Richard Friedrich Johannes Pfeiffer (1858-1945), and at the Berlin university policlinic under Hermann Senator (1834-1911). He was habilitated for internal medicine in 1923, becoming ausserordentlicher professor in 1928.

Wolf-Eisner’s work concerns haematology, immunity research; internal medicine, particularly tuberculosis, and diseases of hypersensitivity.

    Wolff-Eisner trephined the tibia and femur of experimental animals and suggested biopsy of bone marrow as a clinical procedure.

    München, 1906. Translated into Spanish.
    Wolff-Eisner coined the terms pollen disease and pollen sensitivity. He suggested that hay-fever might be a form of hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis in the nose and four years later Samuel James Meltzer (1851-1920) made a similar suggestion for asthma.
