Biography of August Ritter von Reuss

August von Reuss descended from an old families of physicians and Gelehrten. He studied at Prague and Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate in 1865. Turning to ophthalmology, he was assistant under Carl Ferdinand Ritter von Arlt (1812-1887.) and was habilitated for this discipline in 1870, becoming ausserordentlicher Professor in 1885, titular ordentlicher Professor in 1905. When the Wiener Allgemeine Poliklinik was established in 1872 he became head of the ophthalmological department, and in 1909 was made chief of the entire institution, holding this position until 1918.

His son was August Reuss, born 1879, was professor of paediatrics at Graz. He is eponymously remembered for Reuss' syndrome, which is a transferase deficiency galactosemia syndrome
