Biography of Murad Jussuf Bey Ibrahim

Murad Jussuf Bey Ibrahim at first worked as a physician in Cairo, then went to Munich, where he was conferred doctor of medicine. From 1902 to 1906 he was assistant physician at the Heidelberg paediatric clinic. In 1905, in Berlin, he was habilitated for paediatrics with a dissertation entitled Die angeborene Pylorusstenose im Säuglingsalter. In 1907 he came to Munich as director of the Gisela Kinderspital; and in 1916 appointed extraordinarius in Würzburg, in 1917 full professor in Jena. Ibrahim's scientific work concerns, in particular, the diseases of the newborn as well as diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract, and the nervous system of children. He was a contributor to the textbooks and handbooks of Pfaundler-Schlossmann (Handbuch der Kinderheilkunde), Emil Feer-Sulzer (Lehrbuch der Kinderheilkunde; Handbuch der Kinderheilkunde), Albert Siegmund Gustav Döderlein (Handbuch für Geburtshilfe), and Penzoldt-Stintzing (Handbuch der gesamten Therapie).Ibrahim was an honorary citizen of Jena.

Until recently Ibrahim's name was attached to the clinic for child- and adolescent medicine at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena, the Kinderklinik Jussuf Ibrahim. However, an investigative commission has concluded that Dr. Jussuf Ibrahim supported the euthanasia program of National Socialist Germany, and that from 1941 he took an active part in the killing of severely sick and handicapped children, defined by the Nazis as "unworthy life ("lebensunwerten Lebens").

His name is no longer associated with the children's clinic at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena.
