Hartmut Gerken

Hartmut Gerken grew up in Wellburg an der Lahn and Wilhelmshaven. He studied medicine from 1854 to 1860 in Göttingen, Innsbruck and Freiburg. He passed the medical state examination in Freiburg in 1860 and obtained his doctorate in 1861. After working in the deacon hospital Torenburg/Wümme and the anatomical institute in Freiburg, he came to Kiel as a scientific assistant. He became clinical head physician in 1969.

A major part of his scientific work concerned genetics and epilepsy. Epilepsy was the topic of his habilitation thesis. He became Privatdozent of paediatrics in 1972 and in 1977 was appointed professor. In 1975 Gerken moved to the Children’s’ Clinic at the Elisabeth-Kinderkrankenhaus in Oldenburg. Here he laid the foundation for a neuropaediatric department which he developed into a highly reputed regional institution. He had been affiliated with this institution when he retired on September 30, 1899.
