Biography of Herwigh Rieger

Herwigh Rieger was the son of a physician. He graduated in medicine from the University of Vienna in 1923 and subsequently specialised in ophthalmology.

From 1938, when he was conscripted into the army, and until the end of World War II he was professor to the Opthalmology Clinic at the German University in Prague. After a period as prisoner of war he returned to ophthalmological practice, and in 1940 he became director of the department of opthalmology of the General Hospital in Linz, Austria. He retired from this post in 1968 but maintained his scientific interests. His special field of interest was in hereditary disorders of the eye.
