Biography:
Jean Baptiste Emile Vidal received his education at the Ecole de Médecine in Tours, then in Paris, where he became externe in 1848, 1850 interne, 1855 doctor of medicine, and 1862 médecin des hôpitaux. From 1867 to 1890 he belonged to the Hôpital Saint-Louis. From 1883 member of the Académie de médecine.
Vidal conducted fundamental work in dermatology, mainly on non-syphilitic forms of skin diseases. He did important work on lupus and lichen, and interesting inoculation trials with the pustular content of various cutaneous lesions. As a hygienist he distinguished himself in his successful struggle to separate the contagious patients in the hospitals.
