Biography:
Proteus is variously described as a prophet or king of the island of Pharos, near the mouth of the Nile, or the island of Karpatos, between Crete and Rhodos. He lived in a cave and could only be made to give his prophecies when caught asleep. When awake he could change his appearance at will and so not be recognised.
