Jean Paraf
French physician, born January 11, 1888, Paris; died 1960.
Associated eponyms:
Debré-Paraf reaction
A method which consists of investigating the humours (humeurs) with a fixation equivalent to the Bordet-Gengou reaction, but using and antigen instead of antibody.

Biography:
Jean Paraf was one of four children of the civil engineer Emile Paraf (1846-1924) and Sara Inès Sourdis. After secondary school at the Lycée Condorcet he decided to study medicine. Maybe this decision was motivated by his own experience with serious illness: at the age of 16 he suffered from rheumatic pancarditis. He was a pupil of Arnold Netter (1855-1936), Henri Triboulet (1864-1920) and Joaquim Albarran (1860-1912).
Paraf became interne des hôpitaux of Paris in 1912 and had Antoine Louis Gustave Béclère (1856-1939, Paul Clodomir Ribierre (1875-1927), Jean Marie Athanase Sicard (1872-1929), Pierre Nobécourt (1871-1943) and Léon Bernard (1872-1934) as teachers. In the laboratories of the latter he achieved his medical theses.
In 1921 he became chef de clinique médicale under the lead of Nobécourt. From 1929 on he was médecin des hôpitaux and worked at the Parisian hospitals Laennec, Vieux Beaujon, Bicêtre and finally Bichat. Retired in 1954 he continued to work as honorary physician during five year in the tuberculosis departement of the hospital of Brévannes.
His main field of interest was tuberculosis. Beside that he contributed in the fields of neurology, paediatrics and infectious diseases
He married Cécile Neveu in 1915. With her he had four children: Madeleine (1916-2007), Maurice (1917-), André (1918-2002) and Jacques. With Madeleine, physician too, he published diverse articles. Also André became physician.
