Louis Phaon Gambee was born in 1892 at Ukiah, Oregon and attended Kansas and Oregon State colleges before taking his medical studies at Rush Medical School in Chicago where he graduated in 1920. He interned at Michael Reese Children’s Memorial Hospital before joining his brother, Dr. Edwin E. Gambee in Portland, Oregon in 1922. He became a member of the American Board of Surgery and practiced at Providence Hospital in Portland. Dr. Gambee was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was President of the Pacific Coast and North Pacific Surgical Associations. He died September 8, 1957 at age 65 after a brief illness.
In 1951 Gambee was the single author of a paper describing the one layer intestinal anastomosis described above, and later published his 10 year follow-up. The suture technique is still utilized because of its ease and security.
