German ophthalmologist, born December 30, 1882, Apolda, Thüringen; died 1948.

In chronic simple glaucoma a sickle-shaped scotoma appearing as an upward or downward extension of the blind spot.

Biography:
Erich Seidel studied at Berlin, Erlangen, Strassburg, Leipzig, and Jena, where he obtained his doctorate in 1907. He subsequently spent his hospital service at Jena, where he turned to ophthalmology and worked as an assistant at the university eye clinic. He worked at Heidelberg from 1910, becoming head physician 1916, and was habilitated for ophthalmology in 1914, becoming ausserordentlicher Professor in 1919. In 1932 he was called to Jena as ordinarius.His works concern field of view, glaucoma, local anesthesia in eye operations, etc.
