Diogenes

Greek philosopher, born about 412 BC, Sinope (modern day Sinop, Turkey); died 323 BC, Corinth, then a city state on the isthmus of Corinth.

Associated eponyms:
Diogenes' syndrome
A behavioural disorder usually observed in the elderly, characterized by gross self-neglect, lack of self-consciousness about personal habits, untidiness, and compulsive hoarding of rubbish.

Biography:
The condition is named after the Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope who taught cynicism philosophy and a return to a natural way of life, finding his residence in a tub. Diogenes is particularly remembered for his meeting with Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). Alexander was impressed by Diogenes' wisdom and wanted to give him a favour. To this Diogenes replied: "Stand out of my sunshine." To this Alexander is said to have answered: "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."
