The disease characterised by dermatologic, lymphatic, ophthalmologic, and systemic manifestations. It is an Onchocerca volvulis infection transmitted to man by the black gnats of the genus Simulium.

Biography:
Rodolfo Robles Valverde (1878-1939) was born in Guantemala and obtained his medical degree in Paris in 1900. Upon his return, the chief of gynecology and the professor of anatomy in Guantemala. His study on patients with river blindness led to the discovery that the disease is caused by filaria volvulus. The Hospital Rudolfo Robles in Xela is named in his honour.
