Byron Polk Stookey

American neurosurgeon, born January 4, 1887, Belleville, Illinois; died 1966. New York.







Biography:
Byron Polk Stookey received his M.D degree from Harvard in 1913. He subsequently attended the universities of Geneva, Vienna and Berlin, and served his internship at the Boston City Hospital. In World War I, he served with the British Royal Army Medical Corps and with the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

In 1919 he was appointed an Instructor in Neuroanatomy at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, serving at the Bellevue Hospital. From 1928 to 1943 he was Director of the Neurosurgical Service at the Neurological Institute. He remained at Columbia for the rest of his life, and after his retirement he was Professor Emeritus and Consultant at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center until his death.

Stookey was vice-president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons 1938-1939, and president 1939-1940.
