A renal syndrome characterized by glomerulonephritis associated with haematuria, extensive mesangial IgA deposits (the characteristic pathologic feature), and a variety of glomerular lesions.

Biography:
When Jean Berger published his description of glomerulo-nephritis with mesangial IgA deposition, he worked as a pathologist in Paris at Hôpital Necker, and was also Professor at the Université René Descartes. His first presentation of his resultas was an oral report to the French Société de Néphrologie in the winter of 1968. His publication, written with Dr Nicole Hinglais, an electron microscopist, is a summary less than one page long - now cited time and again all over the world. By January 2003 Jean Berger lived in retirement in Paris.
