Biography:
Meta A. Neumann won renown for her work in degenerative diseases of the brain. She came to work at Saint Elizabeths hospital, Washington, DC in as a histology technician in 1924. Saint Elizabeths was the first large-scale, federally-run psychiatric hospital in the United States. Later, she received her MS degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC. From 1934 to 1942, Neumann served as assistant scientist in the laboratory. In 1942, her expertise in neuropathology led to an appointment as the hospital's neuropathologist. She was the last neuropathologist to work in the Blackburn Laboratory at Saint Elizabeths hospital.

Neumann served as the vice president of the American Association of Neuropathologists and was nationally recognized as an authority on the degenerative diseases of the brain. She was the first to describe the findings in primary subcortical gliosis (Pick's disease).

Meta A. Neumann authored fifty publications.
