Josef Gerstmann
Austrian-born American neuropsychiatrist, born July 17, 1887, Lemberg; died 1969.

Gerstmann's test
A test for demonstrating a cerebellar ataxia. It is more sensitive than the Romberg’s sign, of which it is a modification.

Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome
A rare familial form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob syndrome.

Biography:
Josef Gerstmann studied in Wien under Julius Wagner-Jauregg (1857-1940) and received his doctorate in 1912. From that year he was assistant at the psychiatric-neurological clinic, clinical assistant from 1920. In 1930 he succeeded Emil Redlich (1866-1930) as head of the Nervenheilanstalt Maria-Theresien-Schlössel in Wien, where he had been habilitated for psychiatry and neurology in 1921. He became titular professor in 1929. Gerstmann was one of 47 neuroscientists who fled the Third Reich in the period from 1933 to 1939. He settled in the United States of America.
