Johannes Werther
German dermatologist, 1865-1936.
Associated eponyms:
Gougerot-Ruiter syndrome
An allergic skin disease characterized by erythema, papules, vesicles, pustules, exudation, urticarial oedema, cutaneous haemorrhage, telangiectases, and arteriolitis of the cutaneous vessels.

Werther's tumour
A rare tumour described 1910 by Werther in the armpit of a 45 year old worker.

Biography:
Johannes Werther was professor of dermatology in Dresden. In 1901 he took over leadership of the skin department (II. Äussere Abteilung) of the Dresden City Hospital (Stadtkrankenhaus Dresden). In 1903 he began building a collection of anatomical mouldings, the Friedrichstädter Moulagensammlung. By 1928 the collection contained 282 mouldings, two years later it was 368. His successor as head of the clinic, Hans Martenstein, looked after the collection but expanded it very little.
The Werther collection survived World War II undamaged and in 1958 was given to the German hygiene museum (Deutsches Hygiene-Museum) in Dresden, with the purpose of building a major collection of medical wax models. However, this never happened. The best preserved models ar now in the hygiene museum.
