Ludwig Merzbacher
German psychiatrist, born February 9, 1875, Florence, Italy; died 1942.

A form of sudanophilic leukodystrophy, or leukoencephalopathia, that usually affects only males.
Biography:
Ludwig Merzbacher studied in Munich, Strassburg, and Berlin, obtaining his doctorate in Strassburg in 1900. 1900-1902 asssistant in the physiological institute in Strassburg, 1902-1904 in the psychiatric clinic in Freiburg, 1904-1906 in Heidelberg, and 1906-1910 in Tübingen.
Merzbacher was habilitated for psychiatry in Tübingen in 1906 and in 1910 was called to Buenos Aires as head of the laboratory in the psychiatric clinic. From 1914 to 1919 he headed the pathological-anatomical department of the Clínica Modelö in Buenos Aires, and from 1924 was Oberarzt at the German hospital in Buenos Aires. Marzbacher published numerous works on experiemntal phsyiology, pathological-anatomical studies, and (Spanish) on malaria therapy in progressive paralysis.
