A syndrome characterized by an iron-deficiency anaemia, atrophic changes in the buccal, glossopharyngeal, and oesophageal mucous membranes, koilonycha (spoon-shaped finger nails), and dysphagia.

Biography:
Following graduation from Glasgow University in 1888, Adam Brown-Kelly continued his studies at the universities of London, Berlin, and Vienna. His main field of interest was research on the larynx and oesophagus. He was one of the pioneers in the use of the endoscope and wrote a number of papers on pharyngeal disease. A shy, retiring man, his only interest outside his speciality in medicine was music.
